When I look at the team from my family league, I'm still impressed by the names. It's just hard to tell why the results have been mediocre.
I don't think I could improve much at the QB spot:
Drew Brees
Matthew Stafford
For the past two weeks, I've had to sit Stafford with scores of 30 and 20 points, because Brees was AVERAGING 28.0 points per week. Our league has some funky settings for the QB scores that are a little different than the "standard" scoring. I think you get bonus points for long TD passes (maybe yardage milestones, too?). Even with that 28 point average by Brees, he wasn't considered the #1 QB in the league. I'm thinking that's because he took a bye already and a few other guys haven't missed a week yet. Most of that 28 must also be from his home games, because he's known to only throw one TD pass on the road (then again, he only had one of them today in the Superdome).
At RB, I actually have FOUR guys who are considered to be in the top 17 at their position:
Tevin Coleman
Devonta Freeman
Frank Gore
Jeremy Hill
Doug Martin
I think the issue is how I'm missing all of the top 6 RBs in the league. Coleman and Freeman are on the same team, and Coleman was outscoring Freeman for most of the year. Freeman should pull ahead this week, due to Coleman's injury. I haven't been able to use Doug Martin very much yet because of his hamstring injury. Then it's like, who would you drop to get his backup(s)? I had Charles Sims, but he went on the IR list. Now it's "The Quiz Show" (Jacquizz Rodgers) averaging 13 points per week, with a "floor" of 12 points.
At WR, I'm kind of thin, but I like the names:
Michael Crabtree
Odell Beckham, Jr.
Brandon Marshall
Again, they're all in the top 25, but Marshall is literally #25, and nobody is higher than #7. Would you think of Crabtree as the BEST name on that list? He's been grabbing lots of TD passes (even more than teammate Amari Cooper). I think that's what keeps him so relevant. Beckham is on a team with a new head coach, and Eli Manning has been inconsistent (throw for 350+ yards and LOSE the game). His yardage looks right for this point in the season, but he's only recorded a TD (or two) in two games. Brandon Marshall is probably the guy to defend now on the Jets (Eric Decker on IR), and they've had inconsistent play from the QB spot.
At tight end, I think I've gone through all of these guys so far:
Coby Fleener
Jacob Tamme
Jordan Reed
Hunter Henry
Vernon Davis
As of last night, only Reed and Davis are left on the roster (with a BYE coming in week 9). My cousin Rachel drafted BOTH Jimmy Graham AND Jordan Reed within the first four or five rounds. It was weird that she dropped Reed during Graham's bye week. What did she know? When I got him, the reports started coming about his concussion and needing a while to even return to practice. MAYBE, after the bye, and without any setbacks, I could have some stability at a really crazy position. Entering this week, I saw how Martellus Bennett was #2 at the TE spot, playing on the same team as Rob Gronkowski, AND with low scores of 0, 1, 1, and 4.
On defense, I haven't been so lucky:
Chiefs D/ST
Texans D/ST
Again, both of them are "top 10," but pretty low in the top 10. In a small, eight team league, you probably need a top three defense to compete each week in that matchup. The Chiefs have probably had the higher rank for most of the season, but 32 of those points came in one game, where I think they intercepted Ryan Fitzpatrick SIX times. Today, they sacked Andrew Luck six times, after entering the game with eight sacks in all of 2016 (not sure about last season's playoffs). For the Texans, J. J. Watt got hurt (I hadn't taken that into account), and I think they've spent too much time on the field, with Brock Osweiler being so average at QB (check out the regression by DeAndre Hopkins).
At kicker, I'm pretty happy:
Justin Tucker
I picked his name off the list in 2013, and I've just stuck with him each season. He's playing on a team that must struggle to score TDs for at least the second year in a row (NINE extra points in seven games?!!), but he's attempting 2 or 3 FGs in each game at a high conversion rate. Not only that, but I think a bunch of them have been the 40 or 50 yard variety (worth additional points in standard scoring). Unfortunately, it's his bye week. I picked up Josh Lambo (Chargers), who's had a FLOOR of 8 points so far, but he's stuck on 0 (0/1 FG, 1/1 PAT). Granted it's a game in Denver, but wouldn't you think that means more FG attempts than TDs? And haven't two of the longest FGs in NFL history been kicked in those Denver stadiums?
When I look at the schedule so far, I see two losses where my best score wouldn't have changed the outcome. I'm surprised that I beat the 5-2 Team Cardinals by 36. They feature Cam Newton, plus David Johnson, and the Cardinals D/ST. Next week is a bye for the Cardinals, but I don't play him again until week 10 (not like I'd want to win against his second string lineup). The next week, I only had 78 points, but my cousin started guys like Ryan Tannehill (playing on Thursday?) for only 62 points. I think any other team in the league would've beaten him that week.
The week when I played my cousin Seldon, he was going to be locked into using either Russell Wilson (bye) or Carson Palmer (concussion) at QB. I made a comment about him fixing the lineup. Well, he inserted Ben Roethlisberger (380 yards, 4 TDs), and I could only answer with Matthew Stafford. I lost that individual matchup by 16 points, and left up to 15 extra points on the bench (Tevin Coleman). Flip that 89-99 result, and I could be 4-3.
Coming into the game with my Uncle Rich, he was the lowest scoring team in the league. Well, that week, he had six guys in double figures. You might expect it from Gronkowski, Le'Veon Bell, and LeGarrette Blount. Terrelle Pryor (,Sr.) has been a little "boom or bust." He boomed that week. The big shock was Matt Jones with 130 rushing yards. I had two AWESOME performances: Brees (465 yards, 4 TDs) and Beckham (222 yards, 2 TDs), but my other players just weren't scoring! That was kind of a "schedule loss" that probably would've been different under a best-of-two-week format like in the playoffs.
Then, against my cousin Rachel, "A win is a win," but it was too close for comfort (86-85). I had Brandon Marshall, Odell Beckham, Hunter Henry, and the Texans D/ST COMBINING for 8 points (everyone else exceeded 9 points individually). Her lineup featured an inexplicable 0 from Jordy Nelson (he actually played in the game).
Basically, that's a few management decisions away from 4-3, and a one point victory away from being 2-5!
One thing I don't understand is how I'm struggling to score lots of points. I think this will be my third week (out of eight?) going above 100. In a small league of eight teams, I've been able to average 100 in the past, even with all the annoying byes. My team had 643 points coming into this week. Now, in my public league, that team has 683 points (40 more than the hand-picked players), and ESPN adjusts that to be ranked in the 91st percentile of public leagues. That league has ten teams, so you'd figure it would be more "diluted," right? Auto-draft gave me a top 5 running back (Ezekiel "What's wrong with window shopping at a marijuana shop?" Elliott). Then I've been able to capitalize when a team dropped players like Jeremy Hill or Kyle Rudolph. Wide receiver was my weakest position even after the draft. I've tried to "stream" some top 20 guys like Terrelle Pryor and Tyrell Williams. On defense, I'm not sure how the Vikings D/ST went undrafted. I added them in week 1 because of the favorable matchup "on paper" (at or vs the Titans). Since then, they've been the safest play at that position. I ended up with the guy who's held down the #1 kicking spot so far (43-year-old Adam Vinatieri). I plucked QB Matt Ryan off the free agent list. A few of the other teams seem "idle" (not dropping injured players or adjusting to bye weeks), but it's pretty competitive so far. I'm in a five-way tie for the best record at 5-2. My losses were against two of those other 5-2 teams. Once, the Vikings were on a bye, and Jordan Reed was concussed. The other time, it was just that kind of week when you couldn't get any good performances.
I was even nervous this week, which is kind of weird if you were to look at the other team:
Roethlisberger (injured AND on a bye)
Steelers D/ST (bye)
Steelers' kicker (bye)
Then you get to names like David Johnson (40 or 50 point ceiling), Greg Olsen (top ten in receiving yards as a tight end), T. Y. Hilton (#3 wide receiver), and I wondered if a six man team might beat a full lineup.
The way those playoffs are set up, one of the current 5-2 teams won't qualify. I think I'm #3 in fantasy points if it came down to breaking a tie, so I've tried to maintain that advantage. In my family league, I've struggled as the #6 team in fantasy points, and I'm in the much stronger division (only one losing team - which is me), so I basically have to make up the games head to head and depend on having a strong record.
Phew! Fantasy can be a little bit engrossing, right?
