Here's how I would summarize our standings in the family league:
(6-5) 5 teams
(5-6) 2 teams
(4-7) 1 team
I don't think I've EVER seen that happen this late in a fantasy season. It also seems like our division went from being stronger, to either weaker, or in a virtual tie with the other division. Since there are no divisional games left on the schedule, my Uncle at 4-7 has a mathematical chance to win the division if he can break a tie (most points scored) over the rest of the teams. Of course, he also has to beat my cousin this week, and then I'll face him in week 13.
After one rotation through the schedule, I was only 3-4. I think I started 0-2 against Andrew and Chris. I broke the skid versus Robert. Guess what happened the second time? I was surprised to beat Andrew, and then continued the streak against Chris. In the game with Robert (Team Cardinals), you could argue I did too much thinking. If I had to face David Johnson (vs the #32 rushing defense) and the Cardinals D/ST, I wanted to put in a claim for Carson Palmer. My backup QB Matt Stafford went on a bye, and Drew Brees was hosting the Broncos. Drew Brees did have 2 INTs, but also 3 TD passes and a good score of 23. Carson Palmer only got me 17. Then, I wanted to give Brandon Marshall one more chance to justify his high draft pick. Well, he rewarded me with 1 point, when I could have "streamed" Tyrell Williams (18 points) off the bench. The final result was an 11 point loss, even though I had the players to beat my cousin.
Last week, it was a case of NOBODY playing well. My decisions at wide receiver were kind of made for me due to bye weeks. Michael Crabtree put up THREE catches for FIVE receiving yards. I saw some of the game, but not those plays. All I can figure is that they were throwing WR screen passes and he got stopped near the line of scrimmage. I mean, wouldn't you be throwing most passes at least five yards downfield? Defense was also a struggle. The Chiefs put up a 0 at home. Did they actually win the game? It was either that or a 17-19 loss. The Texans only had 2 points on the bench.
This week has been a different story! The last time I looked, I had about 11 TDs from a combination of positions. Drew Brees threw FOUR of them, and then ran for a fifth. Devonta Freeman looked like a tough matchup (hosting the Cardinals), but he's my second best RB this season, and I remembered how the Cardinals have lost some East coast games in recent seasons. He had two rushing TDs, even with being limited to about 70 or 80 total yards. Jordan Reed had 2 TDs on Thanksgiving. Odell Beckham left the game with only 19 yards and a thumb injury. He came back for 2 TDs.
Coming into this week, I had to make up a gap of 90 fantasy points on the 4th or the 5th seed, so all I can do is start my best lineup and then see what happens. I have no more head-to-head games with the teams ahead of me in the standings.
Now, in the public league, it's a much different story. My division has been pretty tough (6-5 is a 4th place record), even though I think I'm 4-2 against those teams. This week, I'm facing 8-3 Team Minnich to possibly clinch a playoff spot and take a one game lead for the #1 seed. I had over 100 points at last check, with only Doug Baldwin active. He still has Tom Brady, Matt Forte, and Travis Kelce, but he's projected to finish in the 80 point range.
In the other division, 7-4 is playing 7-4, so I'm thinking that 9-3 guarantees me a better record than the loser of that game. I'm not sure who our division's 7-4 team is playing. My last game looks like a mismatch (a 2-9 team), but I don't want to look too far ahead.
Between both teams, I think these are some of the players they have in common:
Devonta Freeman (maybe a top 8 RB after this week?)
Jamison Crowder (he's surging up the WR ranks)
Jordan Reed (was near the bottom of the top 10 entering this week, but went over 20 points)
Tyrell Williams (now the #1 WR for the Chargers?)
I don't know which league is more meaningful. In my family league, it seems like a few of my cousins aren't even setting lineups when they win with players on their bye week. That feels bad when you actually DO put in the work of researching stats and trying to guess the better matchup. I did have the #2 pick in the draft, but that feels like a lame excuse. I overlooked players like Matt Forte and DeMarco Murray in the draft, just because of age or changing teams. DeMarco did have a year where the Eagles coach had no idea how to use him, but it's not like he hasn't been a top 5 RB in other seasons. Brandon Marshall would need an amazing four or five games to avoid being a bust. Then, I've lost some productivity from Doug Martin, but he's finally back and averaging 10 points per week. Overall, it feels like the teams with the best records probably have someone like a David Johnson, an Ezekiel Elliott, and then sometimes Melvin Gordon or DeMarco Murray. Even the best wide receivers would only rank at #5 or lower if they played running back.
