I remember at the age of 6 and 7 years old walking to what we called back then, Buxton's candy store off of St Clair avenue. A few of us from the neighborhood would get together and walk all the way there with a dime in our pocket, from Wilson school.
I also remember a corner confectionary near Webster school called Ezelle's (forgive the spelling) it's been many years ago. I still remember the wood planked floor and the huge candy counter. Our mom may send us there for a loaf of bread and a pound of bologna, or even to pick them up a pack of cigarettes, no questions about age asked, it was of no concern of the store owner.
If we had any change coming, we would walk out with a sack of penny candy.
Those corner markets back then carried anything and everything they could pack in them. Fresh vegetables and meats, canned goods to baked goods, to hardware and motor oil. I can also remember a place called Emmett's (spelling again, sorry), the place was on Edwards street off of Nameoki road, where no cash was no problem, many of the neighborhood families had a charge account there they would settle up every pay day, or at the end of the month.
Can you imagine walking into Schnucks and walking up to the cashier with a cart full of groceries and saying, put it on my account and just walking out the door? Ahhhh the good ole days.
