Sir, I drive down Johnson Road every day. Johnson is a heavily traveled street that links There's a small grade school and church next to it for a point of reference. The ditch runs under Johnson Road next to the church and it was overflowing the banks. It was also that way on a street named St. Clair. Now if I understand it that water then flows out to the three pipes you show in your picture. By 3:00, the ditch level was still high so would that not mean there was some type of clog between your picture and Johnson Road? A friend of mine lives along the ditch and he claims the grass is high and there is a great deal of debris in the ditch behind Roger avenue.

Absolutely agree with that comment. However, some of the streets that flooded flow directly to the ditch and don't go through the sanitary system as the ones downtown do.
THAT IS CORRECT; HOWEVER, NAMEOKI DITCH IS LOWER THAN ALL THE STREETS IN GRANITE CITY. STORM WATER CANNOT EXIST ABOVE THE HIGHEST WATER LEVEL IN THE DITCH...UNLESS STREET LEVEL STORM SEWERS WERE OBSTRUCTED.
Should not be allowed to happen and as an official in the district, I hope you told her that. You should also notify city officials of that because, as you say, that puts sewage in other homes. I do know however that many homes have damage from water flowing in from streets. These homes are on slabs and from what I hear, the water was pouring in through doorways.
NOT ONLY DID I TELL HER THAT WAS AN ILLEGAL CONNECTION ON MYRTLE STREET, I ADVISED HER DAUGHTER TO CONTACT THE CITY AFTER SHE WAS DONE FLOOD FIGHTING.
AS FAR AS RESPONSIBILITY FOR NAMEOKI DITCH GOES, IT'S MESD PROPERTY. MESD STANDS BY OUR COMMITMENT, HAVE MAINTAINED IT FOR 60 YEARS, AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO. NAMEOKI DITCH PERFORMED AS WELL AS IT COULD HAVE IN A 250 YEAR EVENT. THE ENTIRE GRANITE CITY STORM WATER SYSTEM WAS STRESS TESTED THIS MONTH, AND IT HAS LIMITATIONS.
I BELIEVE IN CLIMATE CHANGE. I BELIEVE WE NEED TO REEVALUATE THIS AND EVERY OTHER STORMWATER ASSET IN AMERICA (ESPECIALLY OUR LEVEES) TO MEET THIS CHALLENGE. SINCE 1785...8 OF THE TOP 10 CRESTS OF THE MISSISSIPPI HAVE HAPPENED SINCE WW2.
