First, let me compliment you for coming here and answering questions. I wish all leaders did that.
Now to address your comments.
but the water has to get there. This picture was taken at 3 pm on the day of the flood. You will notice the conduits to Horseshoe Lake are only half full.
Sir, I drive down Johnson Road every day. Johnson is a heavily traveled street that links There's a small grade school and church next to it for a point of reference. The ditch runs under Johnson Road next to the church and it was overflowing the banks. It was also that way on a street named St. Clair. Now if I understand it that water then flows out to the three pipes you show in your picture. By 3:00, the ditch level was still high so would that not mean there was some type of clog between your picture and Johnson Road? A friend of mine lives along the ditch and he claims the grass is high and there is a great deal of debris in the ditch behind Roger avenue.
Today there are still areas of the community served by old style combined sewers that will only pump down when the Wastewater Treatment Plant catches up with the demand. Only then will the water be out of basements. In other words...these customers drain through the sanitary sewer system, not through Nameoki Ditch.
Absolutely agree with that comment. However, some of the streets that flooded flow directly to the ditch and don't go through the sanitary system as the ones downtown do.
Today I was in an elderly ladies house whom was pumping her sump pump furiously into the sanitary sewer system.
Should not be allowed to happen and as an official in the district, I hope you told her that. You should also notify city officials of that because, as you say, that puts sewage in other homes. I do know however that many homes have damage from water flowing in from streets. These homes are on slabs and from what I hear, the water was pouring in through doorways.
Now here's my real issue. In the Alton paper today you were quoted (maybe not correctly) as saying the ditches are not your (MESD) responsibility. Here, your first line indicates the opposite. So which is it?
Again, I know this was an abnormal rain but it's the second we've had in weeks. I helped a family member pump water out of his basement today for six hours. It came in through his window wells and there was no raw sewage in it. We're frustrated. We're pissed off and we really need answers.
May I suggest that you, the GC Mayor, the Pontoon Mayor and a couple of good engineers get together and find a solution that makes you all look like heroes instead of villains?
