And so it begins. Secretary Devos was approved as the head of the Dept. of Education this afternoon after VP Pence broke a senate tie.

This was one of the most argued appointments Trump has made so far and has teachers all over the country up in arms.

I was eating lunch with two retired teacher friends today and they were outraged. "this lady is for choice, vouchers and charter schools and has never taught a day in her life".

I agreed on the point about her lack of experience. I'm not sure how someone who has never been involved in the classroom can actually head the nations' classroom. Hopefully she'll "learn".

What I did take exception to is that one of the two men has grandkids who go to Edwardsville schools and his son is a teacher here.

I asked him why his son felt it necessary to move up the hill and guess what he said? "That district provides better opportunities for my grandkids".

So I followed with the obvious, in other words, your son isn't as good a teacher here in GC so he sends his kids to Edwardsville?

Stunned he responded, "their test scores are higher and they are considered a better district". "Kids in Edwardsville have a better chance for scholarships in academics and sports".

So this choice that we're so worried about doesn't count for the GCSD teachers who choose to take their kids to other districts. We want our children to have better opportunities but are not so concerned about the kids whose parents can't afford to leave here.

That's the attitude that irritates old farts like me. If these schools were good enough for my kids, tell me what has changed that they're not good enough for my grandkids. Seems to me that Granite has some great teachers.
