In my view, the police are being tasked to be doctor, mediator, psychologist, police officer...and that is just not a fair weight to put on their shoulders... and naturally causes issues.
A small percentage are douchebags and abuse their power. But, for all the bad stories I read about GCPD, I've NEVER had an issue with them.
During one of my lowest lows of PTSD, my shipmate (sand-buddy, whatever you wanna call them) was worried about me and couldnt get ahold of me (I had taken a nap), so he called GCPD.
They came and checked on me and were NOTHING respectful, courteous, and CONCERNED for my well-being.
And consistently my interactions have been positive.
Yes, I know that they profile in this town...and probably do worse things than that.
But 1) they are human 2) the expectations are "out of their paygrade".
We need to bring along counselors with police in some instances to allow the police to do the police work.. and the counselor to do the psych work...as a start.
