I live in Ferguson. Wednesday we ran some errands in town. At Shop N' Save we were in line. The guy in front of us was white, 25ish. He was talking to the woman checker who was black and about the same age. I heard him say "I'm kinda wondering if anything's gonna happen in our complex tonight". She said "Well, we just have to take it as it comes...until this...CRAP...is over". I want to tell you about Ferguson. When I go to any store, many more times than not I've been met with very polite and friendly black people, but you may not see that if you don't smile or say something nice first (and sometimes, they're first). After work (I'd get off at 6:30 a.m., retired since June) I'd sometimes stop by at the very Quick Trip that was torched. More times than a couple a young black teen male (and not the same one) would see me coming out the door and stand back and hold the door for me out of respect for my age. I'd smile and say "thank you" and got a return smile and at the least a nod (funny, but I'm ashamed to say I've never gotten that kind of courtesy from a white teenage stranger). The rioting and burning was done by outsiders...or don't you keep up with the news? I'm not saying every black person is a saint in Ferguson, but all a person has to do is be big enough to treat someone with respect and kindness...and just maybe...maybe...it will be returned. As far as Michael Brown? Does anyone really deserve to die because they wouldn't get off the street and use the sidewalk? Maybe Michael Brown was wrong for not complying with the officer's request. But what demeanor did the officer use to tell (ask?) them to use the sidewalk? And who is the ADULT and the one who should know how to handle such a situation? I'd suspect that may have had something to do with the cause of what obviously became a tense situation and the result. Shit happens. The officer may normally be a great guy (ever see the movie "Crash"?), but for whatever reason it was one of those days and he did the wrong thing. But he DID do the wrong thing. Three or six or nine bullets...what does it matter? No one deserves to die over such a ridiculously trivial matter. I mean, I'm just sayin'...based on how I treat others and how they treat me in return. Hate and/or preconceived negative notions accomplish nothing.
