Well, to my understanding (and my wife being an RN), you must give a flu shot in the muscle. Reason being, it needs to stay in your system longer to help your immune system develop a resistance to the viruses.
When you get the shot, you should be told to relax your muscle, as a tense muscle (which was pointed out by Charlie), can cause much more pain and prolonged discomfort. I know it's hard to not tense up because of the anticipation.. I just try to psyche myself out. LOL
