From a very Highly Respected Geotechnical Engineer (it took him a while to answer me) "from the research I've done, the fracking process itself is not a problem if done correctly. When water wells have actually been contaminated, it has typically been traced to an installation error, equipment malfunction, or a material failure, such as a pipe burst or fitting leak. So, if all goes as it should, the probability of groundwater contamination is very low."
