I know I am quite a bit younger than you two, but even I remember when things were QUITE different. Principals were still spanking in schools when I was in elementary school. Kids feared teachers and their parents... and when a child was defiant and did not fear them, the majority of the kids knew who those few were... and knew they were the "bad kids". Those kids were usually in special classes, etc. Heck, one day I got caught OFF SCHOOL GROUNDS defending myself from a snowball attack (which was a no no because we could "get our eyes put out" ha!) and I got taken into the principal's office with three other kids. Mind you, I was never in trouble and I was scared as hell... even crying when I was in there. Even more so, I was scared of my mother. When I got home, she demanded that I write out 500 sentences of "I will not throw snowballs at school" and turn them into the principal. He did not want to give me detention because I was such a good kid, but my MOTHER demanded that I have 3 days of it to teach me a lesson! If we still had parents today that weren't afraid of their own children and were able to discipline them properly, we wouldn't have the issues we do today. I am definitely a fan of the teachings of respecting elders and respecting yourself. Kids today have no clue... and that makes me sad.
