Dude, I offered you some earlier, it's good stuff, you need to chill, and stare at the ceiling for a while, you're too tense, here, you can still have it (cough) Take your wallet out of your pocket, and open it. See those green pieces of paper? THAT'S why government is involved in marriage. Now mail those green pieces of paper to me. Ah, man, no my dealer has what's left of my cash, but what do I care, wow, there's some neat patterns in this plaster on the ceiling, that one looks like a unicorn, hey, wait, I don't like unicorns, maybe it's just a horse then... In all seriousness though, you bring up a good point about the financial/legal angle. However, short of filing taxes jointly, most legal protections of marriage, with a lawyer and paperwork can be done without marriage license. Want your significant other to receive your stuff when you die? Write a will. Want them to make medical decisions for you if incapacitated (and make the hospital must let them by your side)? Power of attorney. Want them to have equal parental rights to you if your child isn't biologically theirs? adoption. Just about anything short of joint tax filing or insurance benefits through work can be done without a marriage license already, and if the government got out of the business of marriage, then companies would adapt, and laws regarding tax filing would probably change to reflect that. As it is, in some states that don't allow gay marriage, some corporations will still allow gay partners of employees to sign on as if they were a legal spouse. Didn't the city of St. Louis do that with their employees back starting in the 90's?
