I agree 100%. People quickly threaten a lawsuit, and usually have no idea how the judicial system works.
I just want to point out that slander is verbal communication of false statements, whereas libel is written communication of false statements. Either way, attempting to sue someone for defamation will require you to show actual damages.
It's worth pointing out the irony in many of these lawsuits. Usually the person suing for slander is someone who has advocated for first amendment rights.
