- Yes - death row is costly and families of victims have to go through a long process of legal wrangling and appeals and the like. They are told the guy is going to die and they wait a number of years. Give the killer life without parole and the healing process can begin immediately without all of this costly court wrangling.
Take care of business quickly without all the appeals and it will not be so costly and the healing process can begin quickly without the threat of having it rehashed later in life. As is the case with this Clay character in MO that just got a reprieve from the death penalty. How about his victims families now having to relive their pain because it is being brought to the papers and tv's again?
The death penalty is not a deterrent to malicious crime. I don't say that, the facts do. Look at murder rates where there is no death penalty and in states where there are. The only state without the death penalty that's in the top 20 is Michigan. I have a feeling that even a Texas style justice would still not do Detroit much good.
How can it be effective when the criminals know they will get appeal after appeal until someone says enough already let's just give them life. Take care of business quickly and it will be a more effective deterant. Most criminal are not stipid. They will case a house/business before going in to measure the risk -vs- profit of a crime. If they think they could get caught or killed for a small profit they will move to the next target. The risk of the death penalty as it used today is not a high risk. Make it so and eventually the crime will go down.
Fix the system correctly. SB3539 will do just that!
Nope, scrapping something is not fixing it. It's just an easy way out.
