I don't see any person who works in education any differently than another. Most educators will tell you that their custodian can be a big help to them. The lunch ladies can give some children the nurturing they don't get at home through a smile and a hot meal. I'm sure, as union workers, they get paid good to do what appears to be memial work. However, ask any teacher if they would like to clean their room by themself.
And according to someone I know in the district, most of the custodial workers live in town as opposed to a large amount of teachers who don't.
