: ...for the Nepalese monarchy ever since
: Crown Prince Dipendra went berserk and
: massacred his entire family, including his
: father King Birendra,in June 2001.It was always
: difficult to see how the monarchy could
: recover from that terrible blow.It would
: have taken a really strong,clever and
: capable man to have been able to restore
: confidence in the monarchy after such an
: appalling event but,unfortunately,King
: Gyanendra was not such a man.Hence the
: monarchy was doomed.
:
: I'm certainly no expert on Nepal, but from
: what I do know I don't think I agree with
: this statement. The downfall of the
: monarchy dates from the ex-King's decision
: to reverse his brother's decision to become
: a constitutional monarch. If he had
: remained an apolitical figurehead he might
: well be on the throne still. (Although in
: what condition his realm would be, it is
: hard to say.)
I stand by my original point that something drastic needed to be done to restore the monarchy's stability and credibility after the dreadful massacre of 2001.Time began ticking away from that moment. As I already pointed out,I agree that if King Gyanendra had behaved in a wiser and more politically sensitive manner he just might have saved the monarchy.
Unfortunately for him and for the Nepalese monarchy,he did not do so and so he gave his people no reason to retain any confidence in the monarchical system and therefore made it much easier for the Maoists and others to attain their long-term goal of abolishing the monarchy in Nepal!
