well i have a bachelors degree, so aside from all of the science courses I took in college, I pretty much worked my way up to the position. We work under the license of the chief of anesthesia. So if we screw up, it falls on him. thats why we follow a specific protocol. But once I was accepted to the position, it was a about 6-7 months of training. the training included arterial line placements, which you have to have a 90% pass rate for successful lines placed during the training/probation period. If, after the training ended, I didn't meet the chief of anesthesia's standards, i would have gotten re-assigned to another part of the hospital. probably like an orderly or we have what are called unit assistants, and they scrub into surgery and hold retractors and such. sorry for the long reply....to answer the question directly-about a year of on the job training-assuming all pre-employment requisites are met.
