Re: A Police Car Story

Working Northern and not being cut loose on my own too long I was on a narrow residential street in an old white Torino. There had been an early morning summer rain and the dampness in the air caused the inside windshield to fog up. I remember seeing an oncoming car at the same time I hit the defrost fan on high. Well all that did was immediately steam the window more and I just knew I was going to hit the other car head on since I couldn't see, so I eased to the right since it was just a curb. That worked, except since I went in at an angle the right front bumper extended just enough over the curb to take out a mailbox. Now I gotta call in a departmental. No damage what so ever to the car. Acting sergeant, older more experienced guy arrives and after writing it all up pulls me aside and says "why didn't you just go up and offer the homeowner some money and apologize?" And, no one would have known. Always kept that in the back of the mind but never had to use it.
