    Sully,
    This picture shows the hammer in the fired position. If your gun is not cocked now I'm not sure that you can take the side plate off, I know you can't assembly it un-cocked because of the hammer and sear not being in the profile of the side plalte.
    If you can, take the bridle screws out, and look to see how the other parts are. Cock it by using a pair of channel locks (tape jaws to prevent marring)on the top of the hammer to the back of bridle screw. To disengage the hammer, just lift up on the sear but be careful where you put your other fingers. (Hold the extra fingers on the rim of the side plate or else you might be using some bad expletives.)
    If the hammer cocks then you know it is either the cocking rod or the lifter. With the side plate off you can turn the cocking rod on the receiver and see the lifter moving. Try and see if there is any play in the lifter fit.
