The Smith rotary bolt system takes more wood out of the wrist of the stock than other systems. However it provides a better lock up. Thus Smith guns, in my experience, virtually never "shoot loose." Other double guns, whether boxlock or sidelock, will ultimately fail to lock up tightly. Less wood in the wrist can result in cracks in the stock with heavy loads and long term use. Fixing a crack in wood is less of a problem than repairing a gun which does not lock up properly.

In general connoisseurs of double guns in England and on the continent value sidelocks more highly than boxlocks for a variety of reasons. This applies also for double rifles firing heavy caliber ammunition at dangerous game.
