: I believe he no more identifies with how
: black people are portrayed as I do. Your
: comment to me stated this how black people
: want to see themselves portrayed and how it
: is real.
Actually this is what was said (up there someplace ^^^^^):
Your Comment
Racial slurs in nearly every conversation (even though used exclusively by black characters). Bad
My response:
----> Realistic though. That is how the street kids and gang punks talk. When they are in my house visiting, they are not allowed to talk that way and they respect my rules. But when I was at their baseball and football games, heck when I helped coach their basketball team - this is how they talk to each other.
----------------------
I was just saying that this is how I see and hear them talk. (even those in my family)
: Yes, it is real for many communities in
: Chicago and Detroit, but it is wildly
: inaccurate for many black families across
: the country. There was a Master Sergeant I
: worked with in the Air Force who would have
: stopped watching halfway through the pilot
: and made sure his kids did not watch it.
------> I think it is not realistic to use an USAF Non Com as an example.
A buddy of mine is an Army Command Sgt Major and he would never talk like that, but 35 years of Military has changed him a lot. So he'd be the last one I'd use for an example. Right now, he is struggling with a son who is a gangsta rapper and driving him batty.
Another pal of mine was a Marine Corporal (4 years active, 4 years Reserve) he is now a preppy clothing buyer for WalMart with an MBA - he was a youth pastor for a while and the street punks drove him cray-cray.
My Friend the Federal Agent with ICE - is Mr. Preppy (Think Carlton from Fresh Prince) and seldom even uses contractions.
We can all think of someone who is black and doesn't act this way. Military and Police Officers often times.
The kids in this show are not those guys. These characters are the kids I saw at my sons school and at the school I taught at and remind me of the kids I treated on the street and bailed out of Jail.
We all come from varying backgrounds You were USAF, I was a street kid - I had my first gang run in at age 13 when a street gang attempted to kill me and hurt me pretty bad. They caught me alone in an empty hall at school. I spent a year in seclusion, I was not allowed in the lunch room or school yard for recess - for my own protection [I testified against them and 8 went to jail] The school locked me in a classroom and I was allowed one friend each day to join me.
I can promise you that they were not saying ''I say old chap, hold still if you do not mind, we intend to pummel you!''
