That's very interesting, Sandy. I think John Stewart had the same problem. He switched to an RB-180 for a short time but switched back to his PS-5 because the RB-180 lacked punch. Could it be simply the lack of a resonator? The rim? The fit of the tone ring on the rim? I mean, in the bluegrass world, those Mastertone tone rings are the epitome of punch. Then again, when Gibson introduced the RB-180, I don't think it had made any open-backs for decades and may not have understood all the dynamics.
