A little background info.
I'm using an 83 block. Main bearings are still within service spec, and nice and smooth. I'm throwing in some new standard size bearings. Probably no knife edging at $300 though.
I still need to make a decision on pistons. I will be using stock rods I need to talk to the machine shop about getting them lightened.
I have a #678 head I'm planning a valve job and maybe planed a bit, I'm scared to have anybody local port it though. I bought a bullet 278 duration cam for it. For the exhaust I'm planning on using the factory HO manifold and having a local shop redo the piping from the manifold to the bumber. No cat's, I'm a dog person. I will be using a 2bbl intake with a Weber 32/36 DFEV carb.
I don't have all the details Ironed out yet, I'm just worried I'm going to go either go overboard on the compression ratio and detonate on pump gas, or being too cautious and missing out on some potential power.
This is my first engine, I've been doing a ton of reading and I'm learning as I go, I'd just rather not learn from mistakes on my budget. (I still need to swap in a manual trans and get the car ready for paint before I put it away for the winter. And the other four cars need attention too. Otherwise the budget would be higher)
