: ALL people are "hellbound" from
: the time they're born.
That's one of the most harmful things to teach right out of the gate. You might as well say, "It's a sin to be born," or, "It's a sin to be alive." All part of christianity's scare tactic to enslave impressionable minds. Truth is that we are all born atheist until someone fills our heads with lies and myths.
: It's false to say that Christians aren't
: deep thinkers. I've used my mind to imagine
: some of the other belief systems, and they
: have questions that are hard or impossible
: to answer.
Just like christianity. When you look at it objectively there are WAY too many things that are hard or impossible to answer. It's like the saying goes, "I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one less god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all other gods you'll understand why I dismiss yours."
: What about naturalistic evolution? I don't
: know the exact stats, but even some people
: who think that the Earth is very old and
: that animals changed into more complex
: animals might say that God directs that
: process (despite how the Bible can't support
: those ideas).
At least those people have a sense of reality unlike the ones that claim the Earth is only about 6000 years old. WAY too much scientific evidence for that argument. And if there's any doubt, you've got to the check out the Bill Nye vs Ken Ham debate. I'm still not sure if it was Bill's intelligence or Ken's ineptness that made the difference in that debate.
: So, OK. You're saying that everything
: started as a ball of material, and an
: unguided process has brought us to the
: current moment of history. What does that
: logically mean for human brains? The brain
: would almost HAVE to be an accident, because
: it came together through "random,"
: thoughtless processes. When that brain
: produces ideas and emotions, WHY WOULD YOU
: TRUST THEM?!! Since the brain is all we
: have to process the five senses, what would
: happen if it was broken? How do you even
: know that it's not trying to trick and
: enslave the rest of your body?
Why do creationists use the word "random" all the time? There's really not that much random about natural selection. When something works (such as a species mutation) it lives on but when something doesn't work it doesn't. Of course, it's more complicated than that but that's the general gist of it. Maybe, MAYBE, a mutation can be considered "random" but in the end, after millions of years, it's more like a "trial and error" system in nature.
: If Jesus was perfect, why did people HATE
: the guy?
He may have TRIED to be perfect but he was only human as illustrated by the story where he went into a place and was tossing tables over. Heck, there are people in today's society that TRY to be perfect but being human is being human and sometimes emotions get the better of a person. Granted the Jesus character in the bible is pretty much a made up character but still... even that character wasn't infallible. Heck, even as much good as Superman does in his universe he has his "down times".
: The reasons
: Christians don't "fight fire with
: fire" is because you're supposed to be
: "harmless as a dove." From what
: I've heard, those birds spook very easily.
: Pretty much, the more atheism tries to have
: a loud voice in a culture/society, the more
: it AGREES with things that were written in a
: silly ancient book about an invisible dead
: Jewish man.
It's too bad too many politicians from the GOP don't act "harmless as a dove"... trying to pass legislation to make discrimination a totally legal thing. Talk about regressing to the distant past! And it does seem they spook easily as you just see... "OH NO! HE/SHE IS GAY! I CAN'T DO MY JOB FOR THEM!"
And the thing about atheists are that we live in the now. We live in reality. We don't live in an era 2000+ years ago when things like barbarism or death penalties for small crimes was common. We also see how often it's these religious people (not saying ALL but the ones we see) who practice the most discrimination, the least morality, and try to make laws from religion which, in itself, is unconstitutional. They want to tout how, "the bible says this," or, "the bible says that," all while ignoring the parts they don't like because they are outdated, immoral, or who knows what else. I mean who would think it's right to sell a daughter into slavery? It's in the bible. How about the sin of touching a dead pig? Say goodbye to American football. Ever went to work on a Sunday? Ever talked back to your parents? Women that have a kid out of wedlock? All punishable by death because that was what mankind in the Middle East area was like 2000 years ago.
Seriously, one great quote is, "When properly read the bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived." It's Aesop's Fables for adults. You might get some morals out of it but it never really happened. :-)
Oh, and answering the question in the subject line... We can only hope information like that video helps to open minds and make people live in the real world (as imperfect as it is) instead of focusing on a supposed afterlife based on mythological tales. I grew up in and around christianity and I was able to open my eyes & mind and get away from that brainwashing and mind control and always hope others can do the same. To steal a line from Morpheus in "The Matrix"... "FREE. YOUR. MIND." :-)
