I'm not going to answer the Hell question, because it's only there to irritate people.
Here's what I don't like. Why is the man who made this video stereotyping PEOPLE instead of ideas? It makes the debate too emotional and hostile.
"Your religion is harmful if it teaches you that other people are ... hellbound."
Orthodox Christianity actually teaches that ALL people are "hellbound" from the time they're born. How does that make it harmful? Could you see a perspective where people find out they deserve Hell and then it makes them think, "WHOA! I better figure out how to change my destination."? I'd actually see it as MORE harmful for people to be totally unaware of what might be waiting when they die.
"Just look at the way so many evangelical Christians have treated gays and lesbians."
That's a very irresponsible thing to say, because you're using the generic term "so many," instead of singling out one or two "hateful" people. I've spent YEARS in an "evangelical" church, and I've yet to see a serious Christian who wakes up every morning with the attitude of trying to make life hard for gays and lesbians. If they did, I wouldn't be hanging around with them. Keep in mind that voting about the idea of marriage isn't the same thing as going out of your way to tease or bully a gay person. MOST of the states where the marriage issue has been on the ballot have said no, and I doubt ALL of the people who voted a certain way are hateful "Christians."
How do you even know that someone is a "Christian"? I've signed up for "Christian" dating sites where the profiles will say that a woman is Catholic. In the Q and A section it asks how long you've been a Christian. The answer will be something like, "I got baptized when I was born." Have you done anything about it SINCE THEN?!!! The Bible doesn't say that the act of baptism does something special to change people on the inside.
I went to another "Christian" group where they were practicing things similar to yoga. That's not Christianity, either. When Jesus went to "be alone and meditate," He was talking to God the Father. The other kind of meditation teaches that you ARE part of "god," instead of an individual soul that He created.
It's false to say that Christians aren't deep thinkers. I've used my mind to imagine some of the other belief systems, and they have questions that are hard or impossible to answer.
If you take materialism (there's only matter - I assume time and space are in there also), what about "moral" ideas and laws? We want a sense of "justice" when something goes "wrong." If everyone goes to the same place (to quote the man in the video), THERE IS NO JUSTICE.
Now, switch to a Christian view. Let's say I was running for political office (yeah, right). A snarky reporter asks me, "Hey! Why do you think abortion is wrong, but you don't object to the death penalty?" In this belief system, there's a God, right? That God knows right from wrong. So, even if you DID "accidentally" kill an innocent person with the death penalty, can't God put things right or resurrect that person again? The problem isn't contained in the question itself or the system of beliefs. The problem is that the reporter is speaking from a view where God doesn't exist, and He can't put things right if they go wrong.
What about naturalistic evolution? I don't know the exact stats, but even some people who think that the Earth is very old and that animals changed into more complex animals might say that God directs that process (despite how the Bible can't support those ideas).
So, OK. You're saying that everything started as a ball of material, and an unguided process has brought us to the current moment of history. What does that logically mean for human brains? The brain would almost HAVE to be an accident, because it came together through "random," thoughtless processes. When that brain produces ideas and emotions, WHY WOULD YOU TRUST THEM?!! Since the brain is all we have to process the five senses, what would happen if it was broken? How do you even know that it's not trying to trick and enslave the rest of your body?
There are things that bug me about Chrisitianity, but I'm never really sure whether to share them with people who are openly hostile towards the ideas of Jesus and God. What are people going to be doing FOREVER?!! I'm not sure I'd want to live that long. There are folks who claim I'm mildly autistic. If that never changes, I'd be stuck that way? The thing that makes autism hard (just going from experience or reading articles) is how other people don't HAVE to make an effort to understand your "different way of thinking." They just socially cut you off, and people aren't meant to survive life alone (at least not without a lot of mental and emotional pain). In my own mind, I don't view myself as being socially separate from everyone else, or like I shouldn't try to talk to a person who identifies with a certain clique (hotties, jocks, dorks, goths, rockers, theater geeks ...).
From an "evolutionary" perspective, I don't think anyone should be labeled as "mentally ill," because how is that their fault? Some brains are in a different step of the "evolutionary" process, right? You can't blame them for having distorted thoughts, because their brain is busted, and that's the fault of a random, unguided process.
On a serious note, part of what does make mental illness hard is that your brain is the only organ that can evaluate things such as "logic." But, try to imagine that it's already distracted by a bunch of other ideas. How do you cut through the junk and be able to perform critical thinking?
This is a really long rant, and I probably shouldn't have gotten distracted. Just the fact that this man made a video for the purpose of insulting "religion" CONFIRMS multiple passages from the Bible. If Jesus was perfect, why did people HATE the guy? He told His followers that "If people hate you, remember that the world hated me first." He paints this picture of slobbering wolves (militant atheists) glaring at sheep (Christians) and being ready to devour them. The reasons Christians don't "fight fire with fire" is because you're supposed to be "harmless as a dove." From what I've heard, those birds spook very easily. Pretty much, the more atheism tries to have a loud voice in a culture/society, the more it AGREES with things that were written in a silly ancient book about an invisible dead Jewish man.
