: live in the now. We live in reality. We
: don't live in an era 2000+ years ago when
: things like barbarism or death penalties for
: small crimes was common. We also see how
: often it's these religious people (not
: saying ALL but the ones we see) who practice
: the most discrimination, the least morality,
: and try to make laws from religion which, in
: itself, is unconstitutional. They want to
: tout how, "the bible says this,"
: or, "the bible says that," all
: while ignoring the parts they don't like
: because they are outdated, immoral, or who
: knows what else. I mean who would think
: it's right to sell a daughter into slavery?
: To steal a line from Morpheus in "The
: Matrix"... "FREE. YOUR.
: MIND." :-)
Since you did bring up "The Matrix," though, it's a really strange movie when you view the interactions between "science" and "religion."
I haven't seen that many movies which are negative about machines, software, programs, and similar concepts (but those three do make such claims). Bill Nye, in the debate, seemed to equate "science" and "technology" as things that go together.
When you meet the main characters, they're operating out of beliefs told to them by an "oracle" (a religious concept) or a "prophesy" (another religious concept).
There are somehow two worlds in the movie. Of course, it's not quite like dividing Heaven and Earth as different places, because the software program made to look like a utopia seems to be running on a mainframe or servers in the "real world." Scientists don't like you talking about anything beyond matter, space and time, though. On a side note, they don't know what time IS, but they speak as if they're experts on certain subjects.
How is there a body and a "mind"? Naturalism usually claims the brain and the "mind" are the same thing. The people inside "the matrix" never seem to take their physical brain (or the rest of their body) inside the computer program.
Smith lectures people similar to how a professor or a scientist might communicate. He tries to "break" Morpheus by talking about viruses (science), possibly apes (evolution?), and claiming that humans destroy the Earth (science/the manmade global warming argument). Why would any of those things be used in a negative way to bully someone?
I'm not sure if it's ever discussed in detail why or how the machines and programs act in a selfish way. Morpheus claims they're AI (artificial intelligence). I'd change it to AM (artificial malevolence). If humans had to make them, or program them, how did the evil get there? From the evil inside the programmers? Why would machines that could "think for themselves" automatically choose to act out the evil things humans do to other humans? Yet, if you started claiming "free will," that's a superstitious religious concept.
The most "logical" person on Morpheus' team is made to look like a villain, working with Smith, and he ends up killing multiple people.
Neo rejects "the oracle" (spooky religion) at first, because he's actually using "logic." Why does the religion of both the oracle and Morpheus narrow-mindedly talk about "the one," to the exclusion of other belief systems? How did religion get into the software program or the outside "real world"? It would theoretically only be a "crutch" for less intelligent people, so maybe Morpheus and Neo are both stupid and mentally weak?
There are so many weird things in the whole series. Does Neo ever win by declaring his side of the argument has the most evidence? Does he win by studying quantum mechanics and publishing more academic books than Smith? Does he win by posting viral YouTube videos? Not everyone in the "real" version of the world believes a prophecy about Neo being "the one," so there's that whole dynamic, too.
: It's in the bible. How about the sin of
: touching a dead pig? Say goodbye to
: American football. Ever went to work on a
: Sunday? Ever talked back to your parents?
: Women that have a kid out of wedlock? All
: punishable by death because that was what
: mankind in the Middle East area was like
: 2000 years ago.
I had some thoughts here, but didn't know whether to share them. I doubt God is into lists of rules. He only gave ONE condition to Adam. After Eve was created, she made a second rule. You can't even LOOK at fruit on the tree of knowledge (different from eating it). The Jewish Pharisees had something like 613 laws. Our country probably has tens of thousands, and I bet we break them without even knowing.
Do you know all the concepts from Sharia law? I don't. It's just interesting how I hear rumors that polls in the UK say those folks might WANT Sharia law to apply to themselves. It's definitely not kind towards women and gays. I'm trying to work on why that desire would be there in people to have all these laws. My best guess is, without a list of rules, you can't check them off and think to yourself, "Wow! I must be an amazing person." If you're supposed to compare yourself to a holy and perfect God, and He's "dead" or taken out of the picture, rules probably need to fill the "vacuum" and give people some kind of measuring stick.
