Re: Practice or Racing
I agree with 907. And no, I don't think you're in the minority. Something has to give here for our sport to continue and possibly flourish once again. Because right now we are spiraling into the ground as far as turnout for races goes. The tracks do the best they can but all the other outside factors are hampering us. Cost and time are the major factors. Reducing the amount of classes will help with time. Too many vet and mini classes. Cut the money out of the vet classes. If you want to run for money, race 250/450A. If we need a money vet class make one Vet Pro Class. As far as costs go, I don't think anyone has an answer. Every sport is expensive. You have to pay to play. In my situation, I have 2 boys that ride. If we go to a practice day it is $90 or more not including travel expenses, bike fuel, food, etc.... (How about a family discount for multiple riders?) Lets estimate $150 on the low side for the day. If we ride 3 times a month, that is minimum $450. If we would race it would be probably double that. $900+ That's a nice mortgage payment or college fund builder. Hey that would be a good payment on a new Porsche!! I think you get my point. Most families can't support this. Then it becomes an issue of priorities. Unfortunately, the days of the average person racing mx is over unless things change. Would you like some Gray Poupon?
