Correct me if I'm wrong, but you're argument, if broken down into simple terms, is that "if you're not trained to perform a procedure, then you're not trusted." As an RN, I am not trained to perform surgery, not because they distrust me, but because it is not my duty. If you place anyone outside the boundaries of their job, then naturally, there would be issues of trust and competence. Again, correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that you are placing AA's outside the context of their duties similar to the old arguments placing AA's in the context of independent practice. Right now I don't think it's fair to say that AA's are incompetent in this procedure, with the implication that they will never be capable of learning regional anesthesia. Let's train all types of anesthetists and anesthesiologist in regional anesthesia. Then, we can perhaps compare their competencies. I bet the competencies will have no correlation to the type of provider you are, whether CRNA, AA, or anesthesiologist.
