I don't remember them doing that with us.

We had a lot of eucalyptus trees in our area, and our 1st grade teacher asked the mothers to make a little bag and fill it with 10 eucalyptus seeds. We'd use them in learning to count, add, subtract.

Kindergarten wasn't for learning in those days it was for just getting the kids socialized. I never went so 1st grade is where everyone learned simple math and beginning reading. See Dick and Jane run with their dog Spot.
