My brother-in-law lived in a different part of the country from his mother who was in the early stages of Alzheimer's and one of his cousins engaged in financial shenanigans to get control of her house and land (a small farm in a rural community) and her cars which he sold, her investments, etc. He ran off with a pretty penny with her off in a nursing home.
Something similar happened with a friend's grandmother decades ago where her eldest son took care of her financially and had her well invested so she retired with a good quality of life but towards the end her youngest son pulled shenanigans to get control of her house and money.
Unfortunately elder financial fraud and abuse is quite common.
