VW Caravelle 2.5 ACV 2003 - Needle lift sensor implausible signal - Fixed #

( Optional ) Scanner Used: Snap on modi’s ultra

Hi there , hope you can help ! I have a problem with a caravelle 2.5 TDi engine code ACV.fault with needle lift sensor implausible signal .Engine won’t rev without stuttering.checked fuel delivery,no air in pipes ,changed filter still the same went on guided component tests and no info for this particular engine code so went into another year and info was that both wires are signal .but I have battery voltage to pin 1 pin 2 is Showing a connection to ecu so I don’t suspect wiring . The sensor reads 91 ohms across terminals I have been told this is ok tried scoping it and no waveform .does anyone have any info please ..regards Ian

Hi Ian ,the fault code is17654 (p1246) yesterday looking at data I found that the coolant temp was reading -23 but no fault code I suspect this was the recovery guys erased the codes and the ecu ain’t logged it yet I replaced the coolant temp sensor (hoping that would be the answer )temp data fine now but needle lift sensor fault still there .thanks

You won,t find a code because -23 is possible (ie, with-in parameter,s.)

What,s the service history like ? fuel filter ? etc.

Hello Ian,
Try wiki.ross-tech.com and type in the 17654 fault code

And as Kevin said -23c is a reading within acceptable parameters, just like +123c would be even on a cold first start.
It would think it's overheating when it wasn't, if you see what I mean.

Hi Kevin. I would have thought that a constant temp of -23 would have created a code eventually ,anyway its not cured the problem and we learn something new every day . the service history is good.the customer said it was driving fine and the fault occurred instantaneous and the recovery guy diagnosed crank sensor
I do not have vcds my modis has facility of measuring blocks etc?i understand that the needle lift sensor is a magnetic field that detects movement of a rod in the core and is used as a timing reference ?engine revs fine with sensor unplugged but its knowing where to look for correct test data,and I find some snap on data/signature tests incorrect.
As ian suggested in the next post I will have a look on ross tech. thanks

Hi Ian

Regards CTS,logging fualt i can see both sides on this.
In my experience this can vary form system to system, older systems tended to just have fixed max & min and if within would assumed OK. Later systems do use more advanced logic to monitor CTS and yes a constant implausible signal would log a fault. fault.

Hi Ian,
A scope will tell you straight away if the needle lift sensor is working. No waveform = no good.

fixed, after identifying correct scope settings to check for waveform I found it had intermittent signal ,replaced injector/sensor and all ok now
