LDV MAXUS 2.5 VM39 2005 - Hard / non start - Fixed #

Engine Size and Code *: 2.5 VM39 engine 16valve R2516L
( Optional ) ECU Type: Bosch
( Optional ) Scanner Used: OBD2
( Optional) Fault Codes: Crank sensor circuit malfunction

Started as a prolonged start (worse in cold) until now will not start at all when left overnight but give it a sniff of easy start and away she goes. The van drives reasonably well apart from a slightly rough idle which may or may not be connected unsure at this point.
I believe the crank fault is there because of the prolonged starting as the signal was scoped at sensor and ecu plug and although amplitude a little low (2v positive and 2v negative) seems to respond well to engine speed.

Next thought was an air leak in the filter housing (with priming pump bolted to the bulk head). Capped the inlet and pulled 15 in.hg and the needle did not move after half an hour so think that is tight.

My main query now is what kind of vacuum the cp3 mechanical lift pump should be capable of?? With the gauge in the end of the pump inlet pipe at crank the needle struggled to pass 2in.hg but did eventually reach around 4-5 in.hg max! This seems to low to me but am unaware of the specified value and have not been able to access this information??
Any help would be great or maybe I've missed an important test?? Thank you
This has had a set of glow plugs due to 3 being open circuit

Hi

Have you looked at rail pressure on non start cranking ? have you done high pressure leak e.g injectors test ?

Cant help with that vac reading but does sound low if it has a low pressure pump on the HP pump

I had assumed the rail pressure would be low due to the no start issue but wanted to verify the capability of the low side first, maybe an oversight on my part, I will check that.
As do the leak off test 3 of the injectors spilled around 3floz in 5mins and 1 leaked just over 4 so an inbalance but enough to cause this issue?? Will probably send the injectors away for overhaul anyway whatever the outcome as this could be causing the uneven idle?
Unfortunately due to the insecure system on this van I can only access obd and the values in that are sketchy for example the air and coolant temp sensors show 215'c! And at idle the engine speed value is 215rpm??
Trying to get hold of some kit which could read the values more in depth but until then it's scope,multimeter and pressure gauges!

That's very low, you should be looking at about 15in.hg + at cranking speed with a sealed system.

2in.hg is hardy enough to overcome the pressure differential across the filter head.

Have you scoped the cam vs crank sensor? these engines have been known to slip the timing causing a sync problem.

I think for £19.00 I would change the crank sensor as this is a common fault on these, and go from there

Hi had one of these with same style fault a while ago.Turned out to be fuel rail itself,has a pressure relief valve built into end which was leaking back causing pressure drop....

Hi Luke

I had one of these a while ago similar fault hard to start especially when cold. It turned out to be the maxi fuse for the glow plugs don't know if you've checked that or not.

Just had same problem absolute nightmare eventually found out that crank sensor was not all the way home need to fit the seal into the housing first rather than the normal way of seal onto the sensor then fitting.Would never have believed such a trivial error would cause the non start only from cold.Hope this helps.Regards

Customer couldn't afford new pump currently so being a good customer I installed an external electric pump which runs for 10 seconds when ignition is turned on, van starts every time.
Probably a temporary fix which will now outlive the van!

I imagine an old glow plug relay might do the trick.

Yes Paul, I imagine a glow plug relay could be cobbled together to make it work, I was just interested as Luke had said he had it timed for 10 seconds how he had done it.

I used a adjustable timer relay which ranged from 5secs up to 120 I think? Was rated at a high enough amperage but the wires looked a bit feeble to be powering a fuel pump so I had it turning on a second generic 4pin relay just to be safe, with an inline fuse of course.
