Ford Transit 2.2 2008 - Randomly cutting out #

Hi

2008 transit 2.2 diesel FWD 110 ps

Hi looking for inspiration on this one. Driver reports vehicle will randomly cut out while driving, describes it as like running out of fuel. last occurrence was Christmas eve (and been used daily since)

He reports on one occasion the water in fuel lamp came on. If it stops, he drains the filter, but reports no sign of water and after that the vehicle restarts, He admits that he is not sure if this effects a cure or if it is just 'waiting time'

No fault codes logged.

I have checked fuel filter for dirt / water but only found small amount of dirt and no water. I don't really think this is the issue. ( the indicator show no sign of blockage).

I am thinking possible crank sensor, but no code to support that.

Any suggestion welcome

i've also had the same symptoms on a relay(same engine) fuel pressure reg was the fault on mine as well

Thanks for the responses, where those vehicles cutting out at junctions or when driving along?

How did you find out / prove the regulator was the problem ? or was it by substitution to eliminate ?

These are very bad for ingnition contacts playing up and causing random cutting out. not expensive from dealer and easy job.

hi aidan we had a transit doing the same we did not fix it but the dealer did,there was an object floating around the fuel tank which every know and again would block the supply.thanks terry

Hi Aidan, I've replaced two pressure regs last month on same van, you can normally see it in live data, Desired vs Actual pressure should be no more than +/- 15bar.

New valves require adaption too.

Hi,
Carry on from Chris advice you will also find they idle unevenly and sometimes stall when revved hard and left back to idle .
it will be the reg.

Hi Guys

Thanks Guys for the replies, few areas to consider.

Regulator valve did cross my mind, but this is cutting out while driving rather than at idle / dropping back to idle which is more of the fault I would expect. However I have fitted a new valve to eliminate (I have saved the old one to refit if fault persists)

Sean, good point re ignition switch, I have had these give random none start myself.

Terry Debris in fuel tank is also worth considering. In the good old days this would be high on the list, but it is easy to overlook the basics in this high tech world.

Does tank blockage trigger the blocked filter indicator ? or does that just measure pressure drop across the filter ?

Regulator is very common and normally the pressure relief valve needs done at same time,If its faulty it will fall apart when removed,As above you need to learn pump and injectors afterwards.

Have you removed the crank sensor for a look ? Seen lots in with a huge amount of filings on the end

Roy I was told about relief valve falling apart when it's faulty but I found new one was the same. As long as its assembled it will work.

Hi

Thanks for the replies, this one went out a week ago with a new regulator valve (on SOR) & crank sensor.

I have no contact from driver to say it has been a problem this week, but to early to claim a fix as it previously went 2 weeks without issue.

Although it it always good practice to have a positive diagnosis before fitting parts. In my opinion it is on occasions (especially with intermittent faults) more cost effective to replace low cost items to eliminate them.

We can /could have a debate on that subject I am sure !! I personally think a decision has to be made on basis of cost of component, probability of a fix and diagnostic time to prove good or bad.

A typical example would be a VAG fault code for CTS, Temperature shows correct on Live at time of test. Is it cost effective to leave car to get cold scope sensor cold to hot to positively prove sensor faulty, or better just to replace Â£20 sensor on a 95% probability of a fix?

Basic checks should of course always be carried out and if fault is present at time of test the correct testing is appropriate.

Shane i know what your saying but in my experience if you take the pipe off relief valve there should be virtually no diesel coming out of the orifice and there normally is when valve goes,Im fairly sure if your one fell apart it will need replaced.
