2008 transit 2.2 diesel FWD 110 ps

Hi looking for inspiration on this one. Driver reports vehicle will randomly cut out while driving, describes it as like running out of fuel. last occurrence was Christmas eve (and been used daily since)

He reports on one occasion the water in fuel lamp came on. If it stops, he drains the filter, but reports no sign of water and after that the vehicle restarts, He admits that he is not sure if this effects a cure or if it is just 'waiting time'

No fault codes logged.

I have checked fuel filter for dirt / water but only found small amount of dirt and no water. I don't really think this is the issue. ( the indicator show no sign of blockage).

I am thinking possible crank sensor, but no code to support that.

Any suggestion welcome
