Mercedes Benz Sprinter 2.1 CDi 906 2006 - Blue smoke - Fixed #

Hi,
I have this merc sprinter 906/311 2.1cdi in the workshop with no fault codes recorded.
When it idles for 5 mins it starts to blue smoke excessivly, it smells more like diesel then oil. I have done a head gasket test with a sniffer and it is ok.
I have done a injector leak off test and they seem ok. Live data shows fuel pressure good and maf readings good. i have tested EGR and it's fine. Any ideas of what to do next/ what to scope.
I,m thinking valve timing out but it is a big job to check on these engines, anyone got a good scope reading of cam/crank? could it be a cracked head?
Any advice please?

Possible turbo failure maybe, oil in the exhaust then burning as it warms up, seen this problem a few times.
Disconect the exhaust at turbo, see if it's oily.

Hi chris, I checked the inlet side of turbo and spindle and it seemed ok. Will check exhaust side tomorrow.

I dont know about yours but we had a sprinter with similar problem under the load ok - nop smoke . I left it idling for few minutes - a lot of white ish smoke . It turned to be injectors faulty. Not only one example of this one

they are piezo injectoprs by the way?

Sounds like a turbo issue, but May be worth checking fuel quality / contamination,

I will recheck turbo this morning, then I will send injectors off for testing. Keep you posted.

Hi Shane

ive had a couple of sprinters doing the same .both turnt out to be trying to regen the dpf while stationary for some reason .

We cured them by doing a dpf removal and ecu reprogram.

We used a star tester to go into the system and you can see when a regen is being performed .

I had a Sprinter that would start to smoke at traffic lights.
After questioning the customer, turns out it only started this after his DPF/CAT was stolen and he fitted a cheap one off e-bay

The customer has decided to take it to merc. Hopefully just a forced dpf regen and a ecu update.

Hi Shane, i have done quite a few of these on our fleet, its always injectors, although if its been left to long you have to replace the Dpf as well because it blocks up from the excessive fuel

The leak off test does not tell you much with this fault it's better to look at the injector fuel trims at idle

The trouble i had is that my diagnostic scanner will only go in on eobd, so i have limited live data.I suggested removing injectors and having them tested but he didn't want van off road for days so he decided to take it to merc hoping they have injectors in stock. They could also force regen if need be.

Hi again

The van went to merc and they fitted a new maf and egr valve and the problem was still present. "good old main dealer" .
Any way I had it back to me and had injectors tested which they all failed so I fitted 4 recons. This sorted the issue out.
I was surprised that these injectors didn't need programming?

Yes Piotr, i can tell you some stories about main dealers. i have to send back some of my Vans to them because they are under warranty, even if i tell them what the fault is they don't listen because i'm the little guy; so i don't know what i'm on about. i had one recently which kept on going into limp mode having carried out all my test i condemned the Turbochargers anyway after 7 visits to the main dealer countless conversations with thier" technical specialist" and changing just about every part on the engine we finally got there they changed the Turbo's and it's all fine now. Guess i was just lucky eh?
