Ford Transit 2.4 H9FA 2006 - Misfire and smoke during warm up #

Engine Size and Code *: 2.4 H9FA

Hi

The van starts fine if left to idle will warm up with out a problem and run well when hot, If reved when cold will missfire and lots of smoke for about one or two minunts. once warm the van performs perfectly.
The van origanaly came in to us as a non runner, the timing chain had jumped. We fitted a new head less cams and hydraulic tappets and new chain and sprockets.When we spoke to the customer it turns out our fault was pre existing.
There are not fault codes stored and the data looks to be Ok. The compresions are all good as well as a cylinder balace test on ford software. We have run with out the inlet manifold so its not EGR related. Its had new injectors, map,airflow and crank sensors The ECU had been tested We have tried an alternative fuel feed.
We are thinking it must be mechanical but have exhausted all posibilities any help would be apreciated.

"so its not EGR related." i would test that again. disconnect the vac pipe.

we have tried running the van with no inlet manifold and it still happens so that does eliminate any egr or turbo faults we are wondering if it is valve gear related as it seems similar to a valve bounce noise but it now has a different head although the origonal hydraulic tappets and followers.

does it have a coolant temperature sensor?
if yes scope it when it's cold

What colour is the smoke and where were the Injectors re-worked ?

What software is the vehicle running ?

Injectors have been rebuilt by a very good diesel specialist and it has the latest software. We will take another look at the head temp sensor later today thanks for your responses

The smoke is grey/blue

its very strange Mark yes I agree it does sound like timing but the fault was thers before the chain jumped. We have have replaced the head and chain kit. It starts perfectly and drives perfectly when warm, The fault occurs for about 20 seconds and only when reved hard if left to idle for a short time it doesnt happen.

So you are saying that the fault only lasts for 20 seconds from cold and only if you rev it hard during those 20 seconds ?
