Started looking at this this vehicle late last night did some quick test and took some scope patterns hoping to get some advise on how best to attack this one. Thank in advance.
vauxhall vivaro 2.0 dci 2008 engine code:M9R E780
Customer has owned van for 2 month. The vehicle came to me 3 weeks ago complaining of intermittent lack of power and also intermittent 'anger management light' as he called it
I had a look round engine bay its really tight in there. The vehicle has obviously had work done before, pipes out of clips left right and center, jubilee instead of genuine clips. You know!
Scanner: modis No EML on at present Pulled codes: P0304 cyl 4 misfire detected
The van appeared to be running ok on test drive although I thought I could feel a slight hesitation now and then. It was so random I put it down to my mind playing tricks on me.
Dug my way to injectors to check connectors and found number 4 injector held down (gearbox side I checked code after disconnecting injector) is held down with 8mm allen key bolt the other 3 are correct bolts.
I cleaned the injector connectors as they were wet I dont know why? Maybe previous leak off test.
I gave it the customer back to try and told him I would probably see him sooner rather than later
The van is back and now it is low on power and I can feel it miss under load.
codes: P0304 P0200 injector control circuit
These are piezo injectors I have got a good idea of how they function and why but I have not had much to do with them and there circuits as far as testing goes, so any help is much appreciated Also new to scopes so constructive criticism welcomed.
I can see obvious differences in the waveforms but am not sure what I am looking at I hope you guys can help me analyse it. Injectors 1 and 2 patterns look very similar to cylinder 3.
I will leak back test injectors tomorrow.
Thanks again for looking (Ill be reading through my injector info)
James

hi just as a pos have a check arround the harness as they have a fault and can rub against the ecu mettal tamper cover also had problems with the plugs onto the injectors check the scope signal against current draw for each injector it should help to narrow down what one is playing up HTH martin

Hi James
When these injectors start to fail they can present a slight cough symptom, this gradually worsens the longer you leave it. the mil / heater plug symbol can come on or not normally with a misfire code for the cylinder at fault if it does or with an intermitant code if not. you are correct in identifying the cylinder with care as there seems to be alot of confusion over which is which (even the dealers argue over this)
This engine is also fitted in the traffic and primastar, the traffic code on autologic is a 12v + to earth code and all suffer problems with the injectors being seized in big time, i've now done over 300 of these and they average 8-9 tons of force required for removal. so if it dosen't move after a few bangs with the slide hammer it ain't going to come out easilly and its time to call me !!!. be very careful with the threads on the injector as damage to these dramatically reduces the chances of successful removal although i have had some success where the threads have been totally broken off. check out my website videos and prepare your customer for a big bill.
On a side note beware of the dealer puller it regularly pulls the threads off long before the injector moves as it relies soley upon the threads where as my tool double clamps the injector, i seem to be getting calls from lots of dealers and also those who have borrowed the tool from the dealers with this problem these days.

You can buy a "dummy" Injector box for testing.
Connect the box and re test the waveform if it now matches the others you have an injector issue, if not its a wiring/ECU issue.

Hi guys
Thanks for your replys
The customer wants to use the van for now even though it is misfiring, so I have built it up and he is collecting it.
Thanks Mark The dummy injector would have been a brillint test, I will be investing, as I think this test would have left no doubt.
I dont think I will be doing any further work on this vehicle as the customer has got the (cant you just bodge it attitude) and I have just recently scrapped a citroen C8 for a customer that had timing belt failure but the injectors being stuck raised the repair bill dramatically.
I fear we will be seeing alot more problems from similar vehicles
I bet you are being kept busy Tony
You are correct Martin I have recently fixed similar issues by closing connectors up and wiring been chaffed.
