Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDi BJB 2005 - Lack of power and smoke, codes 16683 P0299 - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2005
Engine Size and Code *: 1.9 TDI BJB
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Solus pro
( Optional) Fault Codes: 16683 P0299

I have a 2005 Skoda Octavia, which is lacking power, and smoking. I have code read the car and came up with the following fault code and description (16683 Boost Pressure Regulation control range not reached P0299)
I'm thinking of changing the Egr vavle, but wont to be 100% it is this before I buy part and fit.
It looks a coplicated Egr set up and am thinking it may be what ever makes the egr tick may be at fault.
Basicaly unsure. Is the egr solinoid and cooler bypass inside the egr system
Also when I removed the pipe which runs from air box to turbo, ther is a small puddle of what appears to be oil in the turbo housing.

vacuum pipes ok
intercooler pipes ok
vacuum actuator on turbo working/holding vacuum
oil puddle in turbo housing any free play/excessive movement/play
i think you need to check these before condeming anything else

This fault usually logs when you have a loss of vacuum in the vac circuit.
A quick indication of loss of vac is to switch the engine off while observing the manifold flap, if it crawls into the closed position or doesn't work at all you have a loss of vacuum.
Mityvac reading should be 20"hg or thereabouts at idle (off memory).
If you have a live reading for the Air Mass on your scanner, with the engine warm - attach the Mityvac to the EGR Valve, apply vac to the EGR - (it should hold vacuum) the air mass reading should drop to 250 mg/st from 400 at idle when the egr is opened.

I have only seen one VAG egr inop due to a faulty valve, have seen plenty of them inoperative due to loss of vac.

I would be making cirtian there is no hole in intercooler or turbo hoses altho i have seen servo pipes a problem too..

"What would cause the loss of vac"
vac hose/hoses split detached
valves that control vac faulty
you really need to check these
have you not got a mityvac if not you are down to visual checking which unless you are lucky is not good enough

Surprised no one as asked this.........

what colour smoke , black or white as in burning oil smoke, you say pool of oil in turbo mouth, have seen a few failed turbos on these .....broken shafts or turbo shaft wobbling all over the place

If it is a failed turbo be sure to empty oil out of intercooler and pipe work , very scary when they run up on residue oil until its all over in a cloud of smoke.

That as well, don't rev the engine until you have had a look at the turbo - if the compressor has dropped, the oil is pulled into the combustion chamber, the cylinders hydraulic & the con rods bend.
Turbo's are weak & break as Lee says - if you find the turbo is shot the oil needs to be removed from the intercooler / pipework or you can end up doing the job again.

The turbo was broken. the propeler on the manifold was broke off and stuck. I replaced with a second hand turbo. The custumer said it was like a new car.
