Toyota Corolla Verso 2.2 D4D 2006 - Injector malfunction P1238 #

Hi All

Toyota Corolla Verso 2.2 D4D (Denso) 2006

Code P1238 Injector Malfunction

Need a bit of advise on this one

This customer was referred to me after having been to Toyota with the MIL on, they gave him and estimate, cleared the code and sent him on his way, the MIL has now come back on

I had it in today for a 40K service (39,147 miles)

As you can see they are quoting just over £2,000 in vat

I have got the same code again and some live data

Your opinions on this please and are Toyota right in changing all 4?

Just seems a poor show for a 4 year old car with less than 40k on the clock

Hi Peter what are the correction figures for the injectors usually you will have a reading of +5 and -5 the -5 will be the offending cylinder the +5 will be trying to compasate for the -5

Hi Peter, if you post the VIN No I will get the information you need on P1238.
I think it’s an injector correction fault if you can do a back leakage test with close attention to Cyl 3.

Sorry for the late reply, but been out most of the day

Martin:
I will post the VIN on Monday, the car has gone back now, but it will be on the job sheet

The vehicle is coming back in Thursday for discs, pads and tyres

I did have a look at doing a leakage back test, but the owner just wanted my advice at this moment.

Its the first time I have serviced this engine type but the top of the engine was alloy and the injectors seemed to be fitted inside with just the connectors showing, the pipes disappeared into the cover as well, I was a bit puzzled as to how you could connect up to leak back test without some stripping down?

Hello Peter, Your right about a leak off test on this engine is not easy.
The leak off pipes are bolted to the injectors, we have attachment’s that screw to the injectors and you can push the leak off pipes to them, you can see them here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mY4xCOW-LoE&feature=channel
This means running the car with the rocker cover off, you could make a cover for the timing chain to limit oil spray but it will be a messy test, it may make sense to remove the injectors and have them tested. Let me get the information on P1238 and go from there, have a good weekend, Martin.

At what engine speed did you take these readings
and with what tool?
P1238 is injector / injection/combustion malfunction and if electrical usually has P0200 present.
Injectors fail on denso systems and the only way to check any diesel injector correctly is to remove and bench test as Martin suggested.
Not many serial tools work correctly on Denso diesel systems and may only give part of the picture.

Hi Keith

The readings were only taken at idle and with the Modis

This is a new customer that was refered to me, he has had the vehicle into Toyota who say they have tested the system and it now requires 4 injectors. I said I would have a look while it was being serviced. I did scan this from his paperwork last week

What do you think?...

He did say he has had no loss of performance or misfiring while the light was on, starting was also ok

Your live data is showing high rail pressure for idle, so I would not be trusting tool unless engine sounds harsh.
Toyota probably had access to more data than you and so it may be a case of having injectors tested on a bench. Did you say how long before code reappears?

Hi Keith

When he had the code cleared at Toyota, he said it came back on withing 10 miles

When I carried out the service the fuel filter was replaced and filled with Wynn's Power 3 injection cleaner and one in the tank, when he phoned later that day to book in for the brakes and tyres, he said the light had not yet come back on (not sure if the additive will help, but who knows

)

Its back in Thursday so will let you know

Hello Peter, I have just resaved the information on P1238
But it’s on a PDF file, can you post your Email address and I will send it.
This information has a full description on the fault with wiring diagrams and a flow chart and its direct from Toyota; don’t ask were I got it.

"DTC P1238 (Injector Malfunction) Probable cause is an injector mechanical malfunction or insufficient compression (valve etc) not an open or short malfunction of the ECM, EDU and injector circuit"

The vehicle came back in today for brakes and tyres, the owner was pleased that the MIL has stayed off. He also said the "bad egg" smell has now gone?

The fuel filter was replaced during the service and filled with diesel injector cleaner and one in the tank. The customer is off down the west country tomorrow so a long round trip, he will let me know next week if the MIL comes back on, if so looks like injectors out for testing and compression check

Yes that is correct as stated above and usually if electrical it would have 200 present but like all problems codes can lie.
How about the claimed high rail pressure reading at idle, has snap on sorted this software problem?

I think you are correct about the rail pressure at idle, should be between 3700 and 4300 KPa, as you say possibly a Snappy software fault

Peter, I find dealing in KPa confusing and this has me more confused! If 1 bar = 100KPa are you saying that fuel pressure at idle should be between 37 and 43 bar(3700 to 4300 KPa)? This seems low for a common rail system.37000 to 43000 KPa would be more plausible.

I think Peter meant 37000 kpa t0 43000 kpa.
I would expect more like 32000kpa (320bar), but this appears to be aftermarket serial tool software data problem if engine is sounding ok.
