Vauxhall Combo 1.7DTi Y17DT - Poor performance #

Engine Code or CC *: Y17DT

Customer brought the car in this morning complaining of poor performance. It feels like a classic MAF meter fault but I checked the output and it reaches 4v reasonable effortlessly so I think that's all OK.

Checked fault codes, 2 faults present, APPS 1 and APPS 2. Both historic, both cleared and did not return with long road test. Checked the live data for APPS, track one gives .49v up to 2.10v at wide open throttle. Track 2 gives .98v up to 4.2v at W.O.T. Within range according to autodata and both rise and fall without glitch's. supply and earth are good which leads me to think they are OK. Fuel filter renewed, Fuel lines inspected. Physically checked air intake and exhaust for restrictions. Checked cam and pump timing. No excessive smoke, EGR seems to be reasonably clean and as far as I can tell closing/sealing. Ive had trouble with Valve clearances on the older version of the Isuzu engine so tried a comp' test but had no adaptors to fit. Does anyone know if these suffer the valve clearance issues??
Customer needed the van back. Having another look Friday so my next step will probably be to check the clearances. Assuming they are OK, does anyone have any ideas for the next step??

What scanner ? How many miles ? if 100,000 plus have you checked the tappet clearance,s yet?

Morning, Thanks for the reply.

First scan was with Autodiagnos but it came up with "unidentified ECU" and would only give DTC (No surprise there, Its more and more common with what was a good bit of kit going downhill fast)Then tried the Multiscan, Worked well and gives live data.

The Van has not done excessive miles, Around the 40,000 mark and I did check the valve clearances last night which were all OK. Need to get back to it sometime today but not quite sure where to head now.

Hi Steve,

Is there a history behind this fault? In other words, did it happen all of a sudden or did the customer acquire the vehicle with poor performance? The reason I ask is that I have had two customers with these vehicles and although both were used for light loads, they had the performance of a slug. Both were checked out by people more proficient than me and the owners were told that is how they are. Anyway, the upshot of all this is they came to me for re-mapping and although I got the BHP up from 75 to about 90, the result was two quicker slugs!

I assume there are no residue fault codes.

Does this Van Drive slugishly at low speeds. ??? and then drive fine at higher speeds like on the Motorway. ?

If So I have had some in the past with that problem.

On one of them a Garage tried swapping almost all parts off another van without success and did every check that he could think of.

The Only thing he didnt want to Disturb was the Injectors, So We bought a set of new ones, He tried them in and he said that it was restored to its Former glory.

I was told that they are 2 stage injectors and the first stage gets blocked causing poor performance at low speeds, And Also that they are difficult to test and repair Accurately. ( Some test out fine but perform badly and some test out Badly but perform fine ) So We Scourced Brand new ones.

Pete, The customer has not long bought the van and from what he says its always been like it. It is only a 75hp engine so I wouldn't expect great performance but im pretty sure it should be better than it is.

Tony, Injectors are a strong possibility but as you say, I have no way of proving that if testing is not reliable, Will have to rule all other factors out before buying some.

One thing I have noticed this morning is, When checking the serial data the MAF meter gives a good voltage reading but the next line down shows a calculated KG/H figure which is blank?? Does anyone know if this is just a redundant field on this version of the ECU or is there something wrong internally.

Hi Steve,

My ACR4 G2 is the same and sometimes will not read both values.

If the customer is unwilling to take the plunge with the injectors, would it be worth considering stuffing some Diesel Injector Cleaner into it and see what happens? Any improvement might tell you something.

Has Fuel filter been changed?

Well it looks like my first suspicion was right.

Air flow meter would reach 4v (On a DVM) reasonably easily stood in the workshop so I assumed on the road it was bound to make a healthier 4.5v. After checking everything else and running out of ideas I started from scratch, Rechecked the meter on the road and still only 4v. On the scope it had a very long rise time and was generally lazy. New meter and it goes OK.

Should have scoped the meter from the start, Doh!
