Audi A4 3.0 TD V6 BKN 2005 - MAF waveform, codes P0299 and P0046 - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2005
Engine Code or CC *: BKN
( Optional ) ECU Type: Bosch EDC 16

Hi all
This vehicle has a lack of power the fault codes are P0299 and P0046 (turbo under boost and turbo boost solenoid circuit range/performance)
I have smoke tested it and its good. My next step was to test the MAF sensor, and the waveform is not a signal i have come accross before on a maf sensor it looks more like a digital map signal has anyone else come across this and if so what is good and what is not?
I have tried to upload the waveform but it's the wrong format if anyone wants to see it let me know and i will e:mail it to you

Allan, due to the two boost related codes, I would be inclined to check out the boost sensor and associated vacuum pipes first. If only to dis-proof it before getting further perplexed with an unfamiliar waveform. HTH. Tony.

Is it not worth dis-connecting the MAF sensor and see how it runs? Might show something.

Thanks for the responses guys.
I have tried disconnecting the sensor and it drives even worse! Further research has shown that it is a digital sensor but as yet i haven't found anyone that knows how to tell if it is good or bad.
P.S. does anyone know what format images need to be in order to upload them to this site so that i may find software to convert pico shots to it and upload?

Hi all
I have now tried several different pieces of diagnostic equipment on this car and it would seem that the turbo variable vane control module needs to be re-adapted to the ecu. Does anyone know the procedure for this. I have VAG-COM pro but i cannot find out how to do it from anywhere.

Hi All
I tried to keep the post brief in an attempt not to bore anyone but here goes. The only code that keeps returning is P0046 (on my Modis).
I have removed the turbo and checked the variable vane operation. I have done my best to ascertain that the maf sensor is OK via live data. A friend of mine came around with his Bosch KTS and the description for the code that came up was indicating that the turbo waste gate solenoid required adaptation. (i,m sorry but i forgot to write the code and description down as he was in a hurry) The KTS was able to activate the variable vane and it moved as you would expect it to. However it did not have the option to re-set the adaptation.
When at WOT in the garage the actuator does not move at all.
I realize from looking at some of the posts on this forum that some people are looking for someone to tell them how to fix the car before they even open the bonnet and most of the regular knowledgeable technician's don't like that but i feel i have tried to fix this car and i am just asking for a little information to help me proceed so that if i do have to send the car elsewhere i can say i did my best to help my customer with his problem.

Hi, the e-mail you sent tells the story
P3348 has a TPI story behind it
can you get the freeze data out of the ECU?
Has the car got full VAG service history?
There was a re work scheme done by the dealers at one time

No service history, the car is a rear end only damaged repairable.
The only freeze frame data is on the print out i sent to you.

Hi Allan, the Vag-com read out gives you all the information you need (i realised the freeze data was there after i posted the last time)
I will phone you in the morning and hopefully put this one to bed.

No fix as yet
I have stripped the turbo down again in situ and i think i may have not noticed that the actuating lever was not located in the slot correctly.So after ensuring that it was i tried to test the electronic module whilst it was still disconnected from the turbo but when i connected the vag-com i got five new codes which would not clear down and i have lost the live to the throttle bodies and the turbo module.I suspect a blown fuse but i have had to come off the job as other work is building up around me and this customer is in no rush at all. I will keep you posted with the progress as soon as i can get back onto the job.

First of all my sincere gratitude goes to Mark Carter for his help with this one.
After adjusting and re-adjusting the turbo variable vane actuator module in small increments at a time i have got this running perfectly with no flat spots and smooth power delivery throughout the rev. range.The reason for the delay in posting the fix was pressure from other work and finding time to road test without too much traffic restricting proper road testing conditions.
By the way my initial setting was only 1mm away from the final setting so it just shows how critical the setup is.

Hi, you are welcome to the help, thats what this whole site is about, because the set up of the actuator is so tight it may help to get a voltage reading at idle,full load and overrun, that way we should all have a "base" setting to start from?
