Sorry Jim it was not my intention to insult, I actually felt sympathy for your situation & my comments were my honest thoughts.

As a Launch user myself so I feel quite qualified to comment on its shortcomings, not that it is all bad by any means. The "pigeon English" DTC's often make me chuckle, but they can usually be decoded into something half useful.

My other point about "self study" I feel may have been misinterpreted. Although you have shown reasonable effort in testing some components, your question....."""so am wondering if the stop solenoid is also part of this unit?""" does display that you are quite unclear about the basic principles of this system operation. There is absolutely no shame in that whatsoever, but it could perhaps raise concerns in your mind about your current position as regards to training. To realise where the gaps are in our own knowledge is one of the most important qualities a technician should have.

I know that is controversial & possibly more insulting than my earlier post, but the fact remains that, if you are not armed with the necessary understanding of a particular subject then it is hard to see how the customer is going to get good service. Unless you stumble across a fix of course.

Your post was well explained when compared to many that appear on here & it is great to see questions being asked without fear of ridicule.

I don't profess to have a full understanding of every (or even most) systems that come through my door, but suffice it to say I make sure that the "learning" side of the job is done at my cost & not the customers. I am sure Jim that you work with the same ethic.

Hopefully we all strive to earn a living & at the same time offer the customer a more cost effective solution to their motoring needs than they would otherwise get at the dealers. It does however have to be questioned if a lack of product knowledge can actually lead to inefficient repairs that result in higher costs, in the hands of an independent. I am sure that is not something we like to see happen, but you can bet that it does so, more than we realise!

Many of the comments I make, are not aimed directly at you Jim, I am merely generalising about the modern job.

    Kind regards

    Dave Hill
