I think what you have pointed out about the EGR sounds quite possible, yet there are many diesel engines out there with EGR that dont have a plate, maybe they dont work as efficiently or possibly the design of the manifold etc is different. It took me a moment to understand the last part of the post but have chuckled away several times since, i have noticed that with this diagnostic hobby (i am calling it an interesting hobby at present, rather than a buisiness!) that if you stand at the front, you get shot first, also if you put yourself on a pedestal then people throw stones at you, thats life!.
