this has been bugging me so i thought i would try and find out more about this flap from what i can deduce yes it does shut the engine down but more importantly its used to create a vacuum or raise the vacuum in the inlet manifold for the egr ie when the egr opens (being a diesel)there is little vacuum unlike a petrol engine to suck in the exhaust gases so the flap is needed on the diesel to produce a vacuum so its used in conjuntion with the egr ducking into the trenches as i post martin
