VW Golf 1.9 ALH 2001 - Been driven through water, runs a bit rough from cold #Archived Message

This Golf has recently been driven through water up to approx the top of the lights level. When started from cold it runs a bit rough and sometimes hunts around a bit.If it's revved up from cold it smokes quite a bit & can cut out when the throttle is released, when it's warm it doesn't seem too bad. My initial thoughts were that it had bent a con rod or two after finding that the air filter had been removed by the AA man & it was still wet, also there was quite a bit of debris stuck around the air mass meter mesh, so it must have taken a gulp of water. I've cleaned the AMM & also removed and cleaned around the EGR valve/body etc.All live data seems to be ok with desired readings matching actual readings. When it cuts out after being revved, sometimes it will turn over as if there is no compression & when it does start it coughs a bit until it clears & runs fairly well. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Regards, Andrew
