The later freelanders , compared to his earlier 02 model miss & blow smoke at the revs you state.
This smoke is not a small amount. For comparison, find another 05 model or thereabouts, & do the same stationary rev test.

Obviously I can't see your smoke over the forum, but would guess it'll be the same after he has stripped & rebuilt the engine.
