Having worked for the army up until three years ago i thought i would give a little background explanation in case it helps.....
Most forces vehicles are subjected to multiple jump starts either as patient or supply vehicle, these are done by anyone without training or experience.
Most vehicles are filled with fuel from cans regularly when out on exercise, a lot of these cans are stood for extended periods of time and also contain water, general crap or the remains of the paint from the insides of the can in a paste like form.
