Hi Roger,
I fully agree with Martin but be careful where you start. I recently pulled the dash of a van to get to the warning lamp and then found the faulty wire about 10cm's from the alternator terminal. To add to the headache this had also had a relay wired in to switch an oven off when not charging, so yes, check for caravan sockets.
