If this is the same as the early ones they have a vac valve on the back of the pump that gives problems this should be changed together with a genuine fuel filter and reset the adaptions.
The one i done was a 2001, also did a 2000 one that needed a pump the easiest way to change the pump is engine out but watch as the cam chains are know to stretch.
