VW Passat 2.0 Diesel BKP 2007 - P0104 Mass Air Flow Circuit Intermittent - Fixed #
Posted by Peter Warman on October 24, 2012, 3:01 pm
Year of Manufacture *: 2007 Engine Size and Code *: BKP ( Optional ) Scanner Used: Autocom ( Optional) Fault Codes: P0104
Hi
I expect many have seen this fault before, but thought it valuable to show that every garage should invest in a smoke machine to save themselves time and the customer having unnecessary parts being fitted
The customer had the AA out as his MIL was on, they pulled a P0104 and told him to get it to a garage and may need a new MAF sensor
The garage fitted a BOSCH replacement and sent him on his way, next day light back on. Took it back to the garage and they said it may be a fault part, but not sure what to do next (no scope & no smoke machine). They referd him to me
Quick check with Pico showed the MAF to be performing as it should. So out with the Smoke Machine
Smoke pouring out down the back of the engine. The pipe had rubbed through on a sharp fuel hose clip. Taped up pipe for now. Customer has had no more trouble, but is going back to original garage as it looks like MAF was not needed.......good luck with that I thought
Also a good example of not fitting parts on what a code may tell you, just the direction to look in

This is a typical example of understanding what the code readr (or the ECU in actual fact) is trying to tell you.
Without looking it up on Elsa, I would suggest the code is not reffering to a circuit fault but more a plausibility with load/Air flow/TP.
Just because a component is mentioned in the DTC it amazes me how many garages will just change that component without carrying out any further tests or attempting to understand why it would infact flag that particular code.
This one came back in with the MIL on again (7 months after original fix) and the P0104 for Mass Airflow Sensor code was back, customer not very happy, so out with the smoke machine again
This time leaking out of the end of the manifold, where the spindle for the flaps comes through (blown seal out), manifold was also badly carbon-ed up, so new manifold fitted
£590.00 for manifold
Been on for a month now and all good again

Thanks for that Peter, these manifolds are becoming an issue now. As the photos show, a smoke machine pins this fault down within seconds - but for those without a smoker. The common sign of the manifold runner bush leaving its place of birth is the large oil spray pattern up the back of the cambelt housing & the vac pod actuator arm visibly curved & pushed up against the back of the cambelt housing.
